Full disclosure: I'm a procurement manager, not a solar evangelist. I manage energy contracts for a commercial property services company—about 14 buildings, mostly light industrial. 1. Is Vivint Solar still a standalone company?
Short answer: no. Sunrun announced the acquisition in 2020 and the deal closed that fall. Today, most Vivint-branded systems are sold and serviced under Sunrun's umbrella. That matters because old reviews of 'Vivint Solar' don't tell you what today's service dispatch will look like.
I mention this because the 'local installer with a personal number' story is pretty much gone. You're buying national scale, which can be good for warranty coverage, but it also means your install crew and your service crew are not the same people. That's not necessarily a red flag—it just changes your due diligence.

Leasing is simpler, but 'simple' has a price. A lease with an escalator can look cheap in year one. By year 10, that 2.9% annual escalation adds up in a way a fixed loan doesn't. When I audited our 2023 spending, I found lease escalators eating 22% of the 'savings' the salesperson showed us.
If we're comparing TCO, I model four things: the equipment cost, the financing cost, the O&M reserve, and the inverter replacement in year 12 or 15. Buying wins in most of my models because your property adds an asset to the books. Leasing wins if your organization can't use depreciation or wants no maintenance risk. There's no universal answer.
One lesson from a rushed decision: I had about six business days to pick a PPA before a utility incentive deadline. Normally I'd want three quotes and a legal review. With that constraint, I went with the vendor who gave me a fixed-price O&M plan. In hindsight, I should've pushed on the buyout clause harder. But deadlines do that.

The 5-star reviews are nice, but they're mostly about the sales rep showing up on time. That's not engineering. When I read Vivint Solar solar panel installer reviews, I skip the cheerleaders and look for three things: Did the reviewer mention a site inspection? Did the crew label disconnects? Did anyone test the rapid shutdown function? If a review talks about 'smooth financing' but not commissioning, it's not telling you what matters.
It's tempting to think a solar array is a solar array—panels go up, wire gets connected, done. The reality is that roof penetrations, fire setbacks, and conduit routing are where quality lives. A cheap install can leak heat, violate jurisdiction codes, and downgrade a building's appearance. On commercial properties, that last part is a brand issue. The roof is visible from the parking lot and the elevated office windows. A sloppy racking layout says more about your building than your annual report does.
We paid about $0.12/W more for a crew with documented commercial experience. Best money I've spent. Even after we approved the premium crew, I spent a week second-guessing. Didn't relax until commissioning passed without a punch list.
National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) research puts median PV degradation at about 0.5% per year. But field variance matters: poor installation, shading, and poor ventilation can push that number higher. That is why the electrician matters as much as the panel brand.
4. Is the LG Chem battery still the right choice?
The 'vivint solar lg chem' combo was a strong default in 2018. A lot has changed. LG Chem's battery business is now LG Energy Solution, and the RESU line had a U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recall for certain 2020-2021 units. That doesn't make every LG battery bad. But it does mean you should not sign a contract that just says 'LG Chem' without the exact model, serial number range, and warranty terms.
I still see old articles explaining that LG Chem RESU is the gold standard. That advice is outdated. Today I compare the LG RESU against LFP-based options from other manufacturers using three metrics: cycle life, thermal management, and the warranty's labor coverage. Solar batteries degrade—any vendor that says otherwise is not honest. The question is what happens after eight years.
When a vendor quoted us a 'Vivint Solar LG Chem' upgrade, I made them write out the battery replacement labor cost in the proposal. That's where the hidden margin lives.
5. Why add a power supply surge protector to a solar + battery project?
Solar inverters and battery systems are sensitive electronics mounted in a harsh environment. Grid switching, nearby lightning, and even the inverter's own operation can create voltage spikes. A power supply surge protector—technically a transient voltage surge suppressor (TVSS) or Type 1/Type 2 SPD—is cheap insurance compared with replacing an inverter.
On a commercial service, I'd put a Type 1 at the main service entrance and a Type 2 on the panel feeding the battery and EV chargers. I priced a proper 400A unit in January 2025 at roughly $400-$700 in materials. The inverter replacement bill is usually four to ten times that. It's a no-brainer if you're already managing the electrical panel.
One warning: don't buy the cheapest 'surge protector power strip' for a building-level solar array. You need a listed surge arrestor designed for the system voltage. That's a different animal.
6. Can a plug energy monitor help before you oversize the battery?
Yes. A plug energy monitor is not a toy. For two weeks, I put plug-level monitors on the obvious loads—a vending machine, mini-fridge, printers, a water cooler. The result changed our battery sizing.
The vending machine was drawing almost 14% of common-area electricity. We swapped the compressor and set it to a night mode with a smart plug. That one move cut our peak demand enough to reduce the battery size by 20 kWh. The battery we didn't buy was the cheapest battery of all.
Too many projects start with a battery and then look for savings. Do the load audit first. A plug energy monitor will show you the difference between a nameplate and reality. It gave me leverage in the vendor conversation, too—I could question their load assumptions with data instead of a gut feel.
7. What is used for energy storage in plants, and why should a facility manager care?
Two different answers here. In biology, plants store energy as starch. In industrial plants, the practical answer is batteries—lithium-ion, LFP, and in some cases thermal storage using ice or chilled water.
When a sales rep talks about 'storing energy', ask them which kind. For a commercial building, short-duration battery storage handles peak demand and backup. Thermal storage shifts HVAC load to off-peak hours and can be a lot cheaper per stored kWh. If you've only budgeted for batteries, you might be missing a better solution.
And if someone says 'starch' when you ask about energy storage in plants, they're either a biology teacher or making a joke. In a facility, that phrase should start a serious conversation about assets, not snow peas.
