Vivint Solar for Commercial Properties: FAQ
I manage energy procurement for our company—about 50 employees across three locations. When we started exploring solar, I had a bunch of questions. Here's what I learned about Vivint Solar from a commercial buyer's perspective.
Is Vivint Solar worth it for commercial properties?
From my procurement standpoint, it depends on your priorities. Vivint's integrated solar + battery packages are competitive if you want one vendor for everything. I compared three providers in early 2025—Vivint wasn't the cheapest upfront (maybe 15% higher than a local installer for panels alone). But their leasing options let us start saving month one without a huge capital outlay. Not ideal for everyone, but for predictable operating costs, it worked.
What does the official Vivint Solar website offer for business customers?
The official site (vivint.com/solar) has a dedicated commercial section. I spent an hour poking around. The "Build Your System" tool lets you input square footage, monthly bill, and roof type for a rough estimate. Is it perfectly accurate? No. But it gave me a ballpark to take to finance. I'd use it as a starting point, then talk to a consultant.
Can I install a solar panel carport with Vivint?
Yes, they do solar carports. We're considering one for our parking lot—partly to generate power, partly to shade employee cars. I'm not a structural engineer, so I can't speak to load calculations. What I can tell you is Vivint's commercial team quoted us a 50 kW carport system at about $85,000 before incentives. That includes structure and installation. One catch: make sure your lot gets enough sunlight—our north-facing area was a no-go.
How many kW is the Tesla Powerwall 3, and does Vivint integrate it?
The Powerwall 3 has 13.5 kWh capacity per unit, with 5 kW continuous output (7 kW peak, if I remember correctly—don't quote me; Tesla's official site says 5 kW continuous). Vivint offers Powerwall as part of their battery line. For our main office we're looking at three units—40.5 kWh backup. Integration is seamless because Vivint's ecosystem is built around Tesla tech. Part of me wishes they supported other brands too, but the Powerwall is proven.
Are there good solar generator deals from Vivint?
"Solar generator" usually means a portable battery + panels. Vivint doesn't sell small portable units; they focus on whole-building backup. If by "deal" you mean bundled solar + battery promotions, yes. In Q4 2024 they offered no-interest financing for 12 months. For commercial clients, ask about volume discounts—we got 10% off for installing two systems at different locations.
What about battery storage options besides the Powerwall?
Vivint also offers LG Chem RESU and their own branded battery (rebranded LG, I think). I have mixed feelings about committing to one battery brand. On one hand, staying with Tesla ensures integration. On the other, locking into a single vendor feels risky—what if better tech comes out? We went with Powerwall for now, knowing we can add more later.
Is Vivint Solar suitable for small businesses?
This was my biggest worry—I run a small company and feared we'd be ignored. Their commercial team took us seriously. The initial quote was for a 20 kW system—not huge, but appropriate. No minimum size requirement (though smaller systems have higher per-watt cost). What mattered: we could lease, buy, or finance. Small doesn't mean unimportant—it means potential. I plan to expand if our carport works out.
